"Flow" Makes the Prestigious Oscars Shortlist

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the shortlists of finalists in ten award categories, with Latvian director Gints Zilbalodis’ film "Flow" among the 15 films vying for a nomination for the Best International Feature Film Oscar, Variety reported on Tuesday.

Voting by Academy members to determine the nominees in all 23 categories will begin on January 8 and conclude on January 12.

On Tuesday, the Academy also revealed the finalists for Best Animated Short Film, Documentary Feature and Short Film, International Feature Film, and Short Film categories.

Among the 15 films competing with "Flow" for the Best International Feature Film nomination are internationally acclaimed works such as "Emilia Perez" and "The Seed of the Sacred Fig.”

As previously reported, "Flow" was also nominated for a Golden Globe in the Best Animated Feature Film category on December 9.
Earlier in December, "Flow" received the European Film Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film. The film has also been nominated for the prestigious European Parliament’s LUX Audience Award, which is open to public voting across Europe.

"Flow" was screened in the "Un Certain Regard" competitive program at the Cannes Film Festival as the only animated film, and it won four awards at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, including the Jury Prize and Audience Award. Starting this fall, the film will also be shown in cinemas worldwide.

It has received the New York Film Critics Circle (NYFCC) Award for Best Animated Film. NYFCC, the oldest film critics' group in the U.S., is regarded as a key indicator of award season favorites. Since 2009, with only a few exceptions, its winners have also made it to the Oscar nominations for Best Picture.

The animated film, created in 3D animation, tells the story of an individualistic Cat forced to leave his home due to massive flooding and seek refuge on a small boat alongside other animals. To survive in the new, humanless world, the Cat must change his ways and collaborate with a Dog, a Capybara, a Lemur, and a Bird.

The creative team behind "Flow" includes director, producer, screenwriter, and artist Gints Zilbalodis; producer and co-writer Kārlis Kaža; producers Ron Dyens and Gregory Zalcman; sound designer Gurwal Coïc-Gallas; lead animator Leo Silli-Pelissier; composers Zilbalodis and Rihards Zaļupe; and visual effects artists Konstantīns Višņevskis and Mārtiņš Upītis.

The nominees will be announced on January 17.
