"Flow" Wins Golden Globe for Best Animated Film

On Sunday, at the Golden Globe Awards ceremony in Beverly Hills, USA, Latvian director Gints Zilbalodis's film "Straume" was awarded the prize for Best Animated Film. The category had five other contenders: "Inside Out 2," "Moana 2," "Memoir of a Snail," "Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl," and "The Wild Robot."

The animated film "Straume" is a 3D animation about an individualist Cat who is forced to leave his home during a great flood and take refuge in a small boat with other animals. To survive in this new, uninhabited world, the Cat must change his habits and cooperate with a Dog, a Capybara, a Lemur, and a Bird.

The President of Latvia, Edgars Rinkēvičs, also congratulated the film's team, saying, "It's great that Latvia has people who create such a STREAM that the whole world follows."

The creative team of "Straume" includes director, producer, screenwriter, and artist Zilbalodis; producer and co-writer Matīss Kaža; producers Ron Dyens and Gregory Zalcman; sound director Gurwal Coïc-Gallas; lead animator Leo Silly-Pélissier; music authors Zilbalodis and Rihards Zaļupe; and visual effects artists Konstantīns Višņevskis and Mārtiņš Upītis.

At the beginning of December, "Straume" received the European Film Academy Award in the Best Animated Film category.
"Straume" was also screened in the "Un Certain Regard" competition program at the Cannes Film Festival as the only animated film and won four awards at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, including the jury and audience awards. Moreover, starting in the fall, the film will be shown in cinemas worldwide.

"Straume" is also among the 15 films shortlisted for the Best International Feature Film nomination at the Oscars.

"Thanks to my producers, the entire creative team, and the Golden Globes. This film was created by a very small, young, but very passionate team in a country without a large film industry. This is the first time a film from Latvia has won a Golden Globe, and it is a huge achievement for us! This is a very personal story for me because I am used to working alone, having made all my previous films by myself. But this time, I had a team, and like the Cat in 'Straume,' I had to learn to trust others, to collaborate, and to accept our differences. I think today, more than ever, it's very important to remember that. Thank you very much for recognizing our little cat film!" — Gints Zilbalodis, film director.
