Recently, the band introduced their first single in Latvian, "Neprāta spēles," marking a new phase in their career. In this interview with Kris & Oz lead singer Kristīna Oz, known for her charisma and thoughtfully crafted stage presence, you'll learn about the divas who inspire her, as well as gain insight into the band’s life and future plans.
How did the idea to form Kris & Oz come about? How did you meet and decide to collaborate?
It started as an experiment that turned into friendship and a long-lasting musical collaboration. Our guitarist Artūrs wrote a song, and he, along with our producer Aleksandrs, invited me as the vocalist for his project. We really liked the result, and we continued creating songs together. We are very different, but in making music, we create something quite unique.
How would you describe Kris & Oz's musical style and sound to those who haven't heard your music yet?
Our musical style straddles the line between indie and pop music, soul, and jazz. In our new songs, you can also hear elements of funk.
How does the songwriting process work in Kris & Oz? How do you collaborate to create new songs and lyrics?
It all starts with an idea put forward by one of us. We develop this idea, and during the writing process, it can completely transform, so the result sometimes surprises even us.
Is there a particular song in Kris & Oz’s repertoire that is especially dear to you? What makes this song special?
All our songs are very dear to me, but currently, I have a top three of special songs:
“If Only I Could” – our first song, which is very emotional. It’s about sadness, both bright and melancholic.
“Changes” – it’s about transformation, a manifestation of positive change.
“Neprāta spēles” – our first song in Latvian, which is very important to us. Before that, we only wrote songs in English.
You recently released the single “Neprāta spēles”—what inspired you to create it, and what is its story and message?
This song is like a romantic black-and-white film, possibly avant-garde cinema, as until the end, you can’t tell whether it’s a sad love story or a happy breakup story. We were inspired to create this song by the works of photographer and artist Marija Pranka, who is also a co-author of the song’s lyrics. Anyone who listens to this song will find their own message in it.

Tell us about a performance that particularly stands out in your memory. What made it special or unforgettable?
I particularly remember the concert organized by “Mint Circus,” where we performed on New Year’s Eve. We welcomed the year 2023 on stage. It was a fantastic experience!
What do you do in your free time when you're not working on music? Are there any hobbies or activities that help you relax and recharge?
In my free time, I exercise, travel, and meet with friends. I also really enjoy studying. Additionally, I am a vocal teacher and continually develop in this field.
Is there any advice that has particularly stuck with you and helped you in your career? How has it influenced your approach to music?
Do not compare yourself to others and do not try to be like anyone else.
What are the band's future goals? Are there plans for new songs, concerts, or albums?
We have several releases planned for songs in both Latvian and English. We will also soon be filming a music video for one of our songs.
If you could collaborate with any artist, alive or from the past, who would it be and why?
Sade, Erykah Badu, and Lianne La Havas—tasteful and good music icons. These soul divas inspire me greatly, and I would love to collaborate with them.
What advice would you give to aspiring musicians dreaming of a career in music? What is the best advice you could offer to succeed in this field?
Set your priorities, be true to yourself, respect yourself, and live life to the fullest—live here and now!
