Astro’n’out vocalist Māra Upmane-Holšteine debuts her solo project MAARMAAR

The debut solo project MAARMAAR by Astro’n’out’s lead singer Māra Upmane-Holšteine has been released to the public. The first track, “Villa Bali”, falls into the electronic music genre and is a striking departure from Astro’n’out’s previous work. With this release, Māra encourages artistic experimentation and exploration.

The single explores the search for new musical sensations while lyrically reflecting on the eternal feeling of unfulfillment. The lyrics touch on the idea of searching for answers in statistics—an indirect irony about the tendency to seek all possible answers in ChatGPT, as if that could change how we feel emotionally. Interestingly, the choice of the main melodic sample in the track was made by Māra’s daughter Ronja, unintentionally marking her own first step into music.

“After 20 years in music, it's easy to think you know a lot. But that’s dangerous. It’s so easy to overlook the fact that music has long since changed. But have I? How have I changed after 20 years in music?” says Māra.

The video for the song was filmed in Andalusia, Spain. “The coincidences we experienced while scouting locations and finding cast members were almost unbelievable. It seemed nearly impossible that an unplanned horse would wander into the frame just as we were filming the final scene in a shopping cart! Despite doubts about whether it was really worth organizing a three-day shoot abroad, I kept thinking—at least once in life, this kind of thing must be done! Creating this video was an incredible adventure, and the memories are now beautifully preserved in the footage.”
