The Offspring is one of the most popular American bands of all time, whose punk rock unexpectedly skyrocketed to fame in the 1990s. Sold-out concerts, instantly recognizable songs, and over 40 million albums sold – not to mention the listeners who didn’t buy anything but borrowed from friends or patiently waited for the 21st century to help increase the impressive streaming numbers of the band’s music. Their music videos once regularly aired on music television, not only during the late-night hours reserved for louder and more aggressive rock music but also during the daytime, when even children were glued to their TVs. Now, all those fans have grown up to celebrate The Offspring's 40th anniversary in style.
The Offspring is often labeled as pop-punk, a genre descriptor that's easy to understand – punk rock that suddenly became loved by as many people as Madonna, Depeche Mode, and Jackson. This term first appeared in the late 70s, referring to bands like The Ramones, Blondie, and The Police, but it truly took off in the 90s when The Offspring, along with Green Day and Blink-182, became arena stars and headliners of the biggest festivals. The Offspring has sold over 40 million albums worldwide, becoming not only punk rock pioneers but also one of the best-selling bands in the long and varied history of rock music.
But that's not all! This year, after more than a decade, The Offspring delighted their fans with a new album – their eleventh studio album, "Supercharged." During this time, several exciting moments in the band's life have underscored their significance across generations. At two different concerts, two megastars joined them on stage as honorary guests. One of them was current hitmaker Ed Sheeran. The other was Queen's legendary guitarist Brian May, who shares a common interest with The Offspring’s frontman Dexter Holland – both have earned doctoral degrees in natural sciences in addition to their musical careers.
Hits like "Pretty Fly (For a White Guy)," "Why Don’t You Get A Job," "Self Esteem," or "Come Out and Play" are known even to those who may have never heard the term "punk rock," would never wear ripped jeans, and would refuse to go out in public with messy hair. But none of that matters – music is music, and if it’s good, it finds willing ears everywhere: on construction sites, in car repair shops, banks, advertising agencies, libraries, hospitals, or stores.
