The Band “Tumsa” Releases First Album Without Mārtiņš Freimanis

The band “Tumsa” was founded in 1991 by bassist Jānis Daugalis, and its lineup has changed over the years, experiencing the tragic loss of two lead singers. Despite these hardships, doubts, and various obstacles, the band continues its journey, bringing in new members, performing concerts, and recording new songs.

On November 1, “Tumsa” released their eighth studio album, Nemiera Kaijas (“Seagulls of Restlessness”), their first album recorded without Mārtiņš Freimanis. The album’s release was celebrated with a launch concert at Latvijas 1. Rokkafejnīca, with which the band has had close ties since the early days of the Rokkafejnīca in Liepāja. With support from Baltic Elektro, the album will also be released on vinyl, celebrated with a concert in their hometown of Liepāja on November 29 at the cultural venue “Wiktorija.”

The new songs were mainly written by Jānis Daugalis and the band's new lead singer, Jānis Dreimanis. Most of the tracks on the album were produced by Gints Stankevičs, who has produced several of Tumsa’s previous albums. Additionally, the patriotic song Latvijai (“For Latvia”) features on the album, performed together with the project REQI, led by Edgar Bergholcs, a close friend of the band. The album cover features photographs of Liepāja Beach by Tom Bokums, with design by Liepāja-based Guntars Petris and publishing by MicRec, managed by Liepāja native Guntars Račs.

The launch concert was attended by friends, family, and media representatives. Among the guests was Robert Dinters, producer and guitarist for one of the album’s tracks. The band introduced the new lineup and performed four songs, with an additional track played at the audience’s request. Later that evening, the band held a public concert.

The current lineup of “Tumsa” includes founder Jānis Daugalis, long-time guitarist Haralds Drekslers, lead singer Jānis Dreimanis, drummer Uldis Knapšis, and guitarist Krists Dēvics.
